Hi, I'm Ken

Thanks for visiting. I'm a recent transplant to the Boston Massachusetts area, living with my boyfriend while he completes his MBA. I'm originally from Utah, I like Apple, FileMaker, writing about my feelings, and eating edamame.

There really is a good reason for taking this website down and then putting it online again with the same content.  It doesn't make much sense when I write it down though, so you'll just have to trust me.  I plan on posting much, much more and I felt like I needed a new back end to help out with that.

And because it's the Year of Ken.

Last week, I signed up to take a short computer class with the University of Utah’s continuing education program. It’s generally a lot easier pretending to know everything, but gosh, I really needed someone to explain to me why OS X Server is easier to manage than Windows. There’s an incredible divide between “computer folk” and “regular folk”, which is how I can get away with being anti-social and saying inappropriate things during formal events. Republicans say, “Because of 9/11” while I say, “Because I like computers.”

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I was playing a board game with SML’s family and a question asked, “What does a QWERTY relate to?” When I announced that I was finally going to get a question right, SML’s mother wrote ‘Computers’ on her card and then said, “If Ken knows this answer, IT HAS TO BE ABOUT COMPUTERS.”

When class started this morning, it included only me and one other person. I think under regular circumstances I would have been mortified to be taking the most unpopular class in the entire school, but today I felt relieved and even thought, “Now maybe we can talk about L2TP first.” And since there was only one row? I didn’t have to feel embarrassed to sit in the front because I’m a victim of iPod hearing damage. But honestly, the first day of class was fascinating. I love it. Even if it is unpopular.

It really doesn’t make sense why I change this site so much; and it could have something to do with my increasing boredom. I’ve been putting off a switch to Joomla for sometime now and figured that now was just as good a time as any. So here we are. Most of my content will be loaded back this week sometime.

A lot of people subscribe using an RSS feed; and I really just don’t know if all of that stayed the same or not. Probably not, so you may have to re-subscribe. If you get this message, that is.

This new template is also the hardest CSS template I’ve ever managed to complete. It kind of ticked me off because I had created the template a couple of days ago, mostly experimenting with fixed properties. When I finally loaded the site, everything looked great until I previewed it in Internet Explorer and every element on the page had stacked up on top of each other. It was a mess.

Anyway, I updated my blogroll list to include sites that I actually read, or sites that link here. I also plan on updating the categories soon (the real reason for switching to Joomla), so stay tuned for that as well. Oh, you can see what book I’m reading now, too. Here's what you should be seeing:

When I read that Apple was delaying Leopard, I almost shit my pants. I think it’s really bizarre that they blamed it on the iPhone. They should start calling Macworld something like Apple World or iPod World because their priorities have clearly changed. Or better yet? Just finally start showing up at CES.

Right now, I have 5 different word processors on my computer: Word 2003, WordPerfect 9, WordPerfect 12, Word:Mac, and Pages. And I’m always looking for an alternative word processor because I’m under the assumption that a better word processor will equal better writing. Which it doesn’t, because after I did the math it equaled 1.5 stupids.

Pages is a fairly new word processor for OS X that comes packaged in Apple’s iWork suite. At first glance, I thought it was a really dumb program and a poor solution for anyone that needed to do…you know, anything. After awhile, I started really liking the program because it was really simple and made things look really nice. But it’s not simple at all. You have to click way too many times to bold a sentence or word. And that really bugs.

Peace out.

SML and I spent an incredible amount of time on creating his school’s website over the New Year because I didn’t quite understand Microsoft’s Internet Information Server. Installing compatible versions of PHP, MySQL and Joomla on IIS became a hurdle; especially when there was an instance when the total hard drive space available on the server was less than ten megabytes.

The fact that I’ve never worked with IIS before and that I’m not a designer by any means, it’s very fortunate that there is a website there at all. The site is still missing a few components, but we’re proud anyways because we proved to ourselves that we could work together and both come out of the experience without black eyes or missing limbs. The very fact that I didn’t catch the server on fire deserves an applause, really, because at point I began looking for a torch. And a hammer.
