"I'm staying here for awhile."

One of the main selling points for my new apartment is that it doesn’t include a washer and dryer. It makes it easier than ever before to never do your laundry and as a consequence, it also saves a lot of time. It also encourages you to buy a lot of boxer briefs and pelt anyone THAT YOU KNOW HAS A WASHING MACHINE with rocks.

I’ve read Blog posts about people that have Monday night rituals at the Laundromat; drinking coffee and talking about their previous weekend while they air-dry their Diesel jeans. These people usually live in Manhattan and they’re particularly fabulous because of the simple fact that they live on that island.

Salt Lake City is a little different because anyone here that is fabulous has a washer and dryer in their home or apartment. And they usually drive an Audi. When you walk into the Laundromat on 400 East, it is like walking into an unkempt Trailer Park in Cache County. And the parking lot is filled with Pontiac automobiles.

It’s not really fair to say that the Laundromat is like a Trailer Park; because Trailers in Utah have washing machines. When I walked into the 400 East Laundromat on Saturday afternoon it was more like what I’d imagine walking into a GAP Sweatshop in the late 90’s would be like. I expected to see blood in the washing machines and rampant gunfire battles.

And I might be over-reacting; but until you’ve had an old man, whose life is being sustained only by the tank of oxygen strapped onto his back, watch you fold your underwear you will never understand the pure terror of the Downtown Laundromat.
